culture as a symbol of anti-establishment and rejection of societal norms, it evolved meaning over time. In the 1980s, it was worn by gay men, indicating practicing safe sex during the AIDS epidemic. As the epidemic faded, but the hate and fear towards the LGBTQ+ community did not, the

safety pin became a symbol of allyship, signaling a 'safe person' to members

of the community. A re-emergence in 2016 during BREXIT revived the safety

pin as a symbol of a safe person to all marginalized groups in a time where

hate crimes were rising and rights were being taken away. It has since

spread to the US and beyond; a symbol of defiance against governments

stripping the rights of the marginalized, and of peace and safety towards

those affected.
